Study: Teen smoking rates dropped after Washington legalized marijuana

Contrary to predictions, teen marijuana use declined in Washington state after recreational pot was legalized in 2012, a new study finds. Researchers analyzed data from the Washington Healthy Youth Surveys of 2010-2012 and 2014-2016. They found that marijuana use among eighth-graders fell from almost 10 percent to just over 7 percent. In 10th grade, pot use declined from nearly 20 percent to less than 18 percent. There was no change among 12th graders, the study found. But while the findings are encouraging, there is not enough evidence to determine the long-term effects of legalization on youth marijuana use, said the researchers at the RAND Corporation and other organizations. "These findings do not provide a final answer about how legalization ultimately may influence youth marijuana usage," said study co-author Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, co-director of RAND's Drug Policy Research Center. "A variety of factors may influence the behavior of adolescents a

Anxious teens gain confidence by performing ‘off script’

Improvisational theater training can reduce fearfulness and anxiety among teens struggling with social interactions, a new University of Michigan study suggests. School-based improv theater—performing without a script or preparation—may be effective for social phobias and anxiety disorders because it offers a low stigma, low cost and more accessible context for help in reducing these symptoms, say U-M researchers. Participating in improv can enhance a student’s well-being and reduce their anxiety, says lead author Peter Felsman, a graduate student in social work and psychology. “In addition, the mutual support that improvisation rewards builds trust, helping group members feel safer taking risks and more willing to make mistakes,” he said. Felsman and colleagues say this is the first study to examine whether improvisational training can be linked to reduced social anxiety in a school setting. For the study, nearly 270 Detroit high school and middle school students partici

Trump Demands Stop To Emoluments Case As State AGs Subpoena 38 Witnesses

Image
President Trump’s Justice Department is scrambling to stop two state attorneys general from procuring evidence about whether the President is violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause by filing an emergency appeal in the Fourth Circuit court. Warning that attorneys general from Maryland and DC have sent 38 subpoenas to third parties, Justice Department attorneys argue that the court needs to halt the lawsuit at the district court level before documents from those subpoenas are returned by a January 3 deadline. Trump lost a motion to dismiss the suit at the district court level in the case, and he filed the appeal as a petition for writ of mandamus, essentially asking the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals to override the lower court and halt the case immediately before throwing it out entirely. DOJ attorneys argue that the state attorneys general have a “fundamentally flawed” view of the Constitution and that the lower court judge, District Judge Peter Messitte, co

Chicken Pasanda or Passanda

Image
A chicken pasanda is a relatively mild ‘Mughal’ curry loaded with yoghurt and almond and is one of my absolute favourites. Chicken Pasanda or Passanda. My chicken pasanda recipe was born out of a rather disappointing visit to an Indian restaurant in Budapest. A trip of all things, to get a broken tooth fixed. It was my first visit to a dentist in 25 years and not one that I relished. I have no issue with dentists. I do however have an irrational phobia of injections. So after I got all fixed up and things had worn off I was given a big boy treat of a night out in the big city as a result of being a ‘brave little soldier’. My choice for a night out will typically always involve lots of beer. Some loud rock music and a curry. Rather than go to one of our tried and trusted restaurants I figured we would try somewhere new that had decent reviews. My wife ordered the chicken pasanda and me the lamb vindaloo. Both dishes I love cooking at home. You can see a slightly sideway
